The Menin Gate Memorial bears the names of almost 55,000 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the Ypres Salient and whose graves are unknown.

During and after the First World War the Commission carried out nearly 774,000 burials. Over 560,000 people whose bodies could not be found were commemorated on memorials such as the Menin Gate.
