Being able to identify remains was often difficult
and sometimes impossible, even with the help of identity
tags and regimental badges. The men of the Graves Concentration
Units were master detectives. They came to know how
to use any clue, however seemingly insignificant –
initials etched on a spoon, a rusty compass, even the
shade of khaki that had been issued to any unit at a
particular time.
