Over a long period of time, young people repeatedly
damaged the memorial at Tower Hamlets. It was then re-designed
and re-located and remains virtually untouched. What
made the difference?
Read the list of changes made and discuss why they
might each have each made a difference to the level
of vandalism.
- The memorial was moved from an isolated corner
to a place which was overlooked and had a lot more
pedestrian traffic
- It was turned so it faced north and was therefore
out of the sun
- Absorbent stone was replaced with polished surfaces
- The steps were removed
- The Cross of Sacrifice was replaced by a simple
cut-out shape in the body of the stonework
