Lombardsijde Churchyard is located 3 km north of Nieuwpoort and 14 km south west of Oostende.
From Oostende the N318 passes via Raversijde (4 km), Westende (1 km) and finally onto Lombardsijde (1 km). Lombardsijde is approached via the Lombardsijdelaan which continues to the village centre itself. The churchyard is located on the left hand side of the Lombardsijdelaan.
The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940, and suffered many casualties in covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk. Commonwealth forces did not return until September 1944, but in the intervening years, many airmen were shot down or crashed in raids on strategic objectives in Belgium, or while returning from missions over Germany.
Lombardsijde Churchyard contains 11 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, six of them unidentified.
