Location Information

Kuressaare Town Cemetery is a 4 hour drive, including ferry crossing, from Tallinn on the island of Saaremaa. The cemetery is easily found off to the left of the main road on entering the town - signed for the German War Graves.

The single grave, marked by granite headstone with kerbed surrounds and centre filled, is located in the old section of the cemetery, to the south east of the entrance close to the old mortuary buildings.

Historical Information

Kuressaare (late Arensburg) is a town on the South coast of the Island of Oesel, which lies across the mouth of the Gulf of Riga. The cemetery contains the grave of the Master of a merchant vessel lent to the Russian Government, and involved in the fighting in August, 1917, which led to the Russian evacuation of Riga.
