Remembering Fromelles - A new cemetery for a new century
Compiled by Julie Summers.
In May 2009 archaeologists began to excavate the remains of 250 British and Australian soldiers, buried behind German lines after the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916 - undiscovered, for nearly a century until an Australian historian found evidence to confirm the graves, and men, were there.
This commemorative publication tells the story behind the search for these men, how they died, and the extraordinary efforts to give them the final dignity in death their sacrifice so richly deserves - in the first new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery to be built in more than fifty years.
Remembered - The History of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Remembered features images by award winning photographer Brian Harris, never before seen photographs from the Commission's own archives and a new history of the Commission by renowned author Julie Summers.
Remembered will be available direct from the Commission at a special price of £29.95 including postage and packing (non UK buyers, please use the Contact Us page to request details). We are aware that Remembered is available elsewhere for a reduced price, but buying it from us ensures that the money goes straight to the Commission and be used to care for the graves and memorials of the war dead around the world.
Michelin Road Atlas - Cemeteries and Memorials in Belgium and Northern France
Michelin, the principal continental map publisher, has produced for the Commission a new compact road atlas covering the areas with the densest population of war cemeteries in northern France and Belgium, including Normandy. The atlas, with road maps in Michelin's 1:200,000 series overprinted to show the location of each Commonwealth cemetery and memorial, comes with an alphabetical index.
The Unending Vigil - The History of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
This book by Philip Longworth tells the Commission's story from its beginnings on the Western Front during the First World War under the direction of Fabian Ware, describing the contribution made by the architects, sculptors, engineers, horticulturalists and men of letters who combined to create the war cemeteries and memorials that are so familiar today.
