FRANCE - VILLERS-BRETONNEUX MILITARY CEMETERY

March 2016 - Work on the new Sir John Monash Centre, to be located at the Australian National Memorial site near Villers-Bretonneux in France, commenced in January 2016 and will continue through to the official opening in April 2018. During this period, there may be short periods of disruption to visitors at the site and adjacent Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Villers-Bretonneux Military cemetery.

As part of the works we have just been informed that as from Monday, 16 May for at least 6 months the car park will be closed at this site. Visitors will be directed to use the temporary car park on the other side of the Australian National Memorial. Disabled car park facilities will also be provided at weekends and outside working hours when the CWGC service entrance is closed. To add, the bus turning area on the south side of the site will remain accessible throughout the works.

UK - LYNESS ROYAL NAVAL CEMETERY

An event occuring at the cemetery will require significant construction and deconstruction works adjacent to the cemetery, access to certain areas will not be possible from 27 May, although this should not affect those wishing to see individual graves. The site will however be closed from 06.00 on 29 May until 12.00 on 2 June 2016. For further information please contact events@cwgc.org or call 01628 507141.

MALTA - IMTARFA MILITARY CEMETERY

Stone vaults are currently being installed at graves located in Plot 2 Row 2 & Plot 4 Row 1a & 1b and is scheduled to be completed by 20th June. There may be some disruption around these plots during this time.

FRANCE - THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

From 2 until 25 May the final stage of preparing the memorial for the Centenary will take place. This will involve 7 panels being replaced and other areas of the memorial undergoing a final clean.

The memorial will be accessible at all times but whilst the panels (below) are being replaced they will not be available for view.

Pier and face 1C (Panel H3), Pier and face 3A (Panel G2), Pier and face 4A (Panel G2), Pier and face 5A (Panel H3), Pier and face 11A (Panel F4), Pier and face 11B (Panel E2), Pier and face 12C (Panel H4).


16 - 26 June and 4 - 9 July
Access to the site will only be possible through pre-arranged visits which will be conducted by Commonwealth War Graves Commission staff. To request a visit please contact events@cwgc.org


27 June to 3 July
Access to the site will not be possible.

In order to ensure security at the commemorative events taking place on 1 July 2016, marking the centenary of the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, French Authorities will be enforcing a security cordon in the area prohibiting access to all except those who are attending one of the events. The cordon may be subject to change by the French authorities. A map showing the security cordon and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission sites we expect to be inaccessible as a result of the cordon from mid-afternoon on 30 June until early morning on 2 July.
