In order to ensure security at the commemorative events taking
place on 1 July 2016, marking the centenary of the First Day of the
Battle of the Somme, French Authorities will be enforcing a
security cordon in the area prohibiting access to all except those
who are attending one of the events. The cordon may be subject to
change by the French authorities. A map
showing the security cordon and the Commonwealth War Graves
Commission sites we expect to be inaccessible as a result of the
cordon from 29 June until early morning on 2 July.
On 1 July 2016, a Canadian National Ceremony of remembrance will
be held at the Beaumont-Hamel (Newfoundland) Memorial, to mark the
centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
The event will require significant preparation on site, and the
CWGC is supporting Veterans Affairs Canada to ensure this is
possible. Beaumont-Hamel (Newfoundland) Memorial will therefore be
closed from 29 June - 1 July.
This will also affect access to the three CWGC cemeteries
situated within the Park: Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery No.2, Hunter's
Cemetery and Y Ravine Cemetery during this period.
