Daughter of Ambon War Cemetery creator attends ceremony marking 75 years since the Battle of Ambon

The daughter of an Australian Second World War veteran has attended a special service of commemoration at the Ambon War Cemetery, Indonesia, which her father built 50 years ago.  The ceremony involved the rededication of the cemetery and memorial by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to mark the 75th anniversary of the fall of Ambon to Japanese forces on February 3, 1942.

There will be a rededication ceremony at Hooge Crater Cemetery on 27 January 2017.

The ceremony is being held to recognise that, following the presentation of research supported by evidence, two casualties originally buried as Unknown Australian Soldiers have now been identified.

A special service was held at Margate Cemetery, Kent today, November 30, to honour two Lascar Seamen who died upon “S.S. Matra”, which sank on November 13, 1939, after hitting a German underwater mine.
