CWGC Places Information Panels at The Merchant Navy Memorial, London

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has placed two sets of information panels at The Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill, London. The panels are in place ahead of the 70th Anniversary Commemorations of the Battle of the Atlantic, on 11 May 2013.

88 year old Mrs. M.R. Cantem, better known as Peggy or Aunty Peggy, is one of the most popular figures in Jhansi today. She was all set to migrate to the UK but when her husband passed away in 1986, she changed her mind and stayed to work with the local community. In 2004, Peggy decided to restore the Jhansi Lynchgate Cemetery, which along with 62 Commission cantonment graves, has graves dating back to the era of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857.

At 11 am on 11 November this year, Pilot Stewart Smith led an extraordinary tribute to the fallen of the Great War in his replica First World War biplane – a De Haviland DH2 open cockpit “pusher” aircraft – as he overflew the Commission’s largest memorial to the missing at Thiepval in France.
