Plans to mark 100 years since the beginning of the First World War in 2014 are announced by the United Kingdom government. An event at St. Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons, Belgium will feature prominently on the opening day of the centenary on 4 August 2014.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, accompanied by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, Commissioner of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, laid a wreath at the Liverpool Naval Memorial – a Commonwealth War Graves Commission site – to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic on 26 May 2013.
