11 June 2012

The newly-elected President of France, Francois Hollande, has attended a commemoration ceremony at Ranville War Cemetery in Normandy, to mark the 68th anniversary of D-Day.

President Hollande laid a wreath and shook hands with a veteran of the 6th Airborne Division, who landed by glider and parachute and captured the village of Ranville early on June 6th, 1944.

Many of the division's casualties are buried in Ranville War Cemetery, which contains 2,235 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 97 of them unidentified. There are also 330 German graves.
