Swanton Morley Church Council thank CWGC for new sign highlighting the location of war graves
26 February 2013
Members of Swanton Morley Parochial Church Council have thanked
the CWGC for a new sign highlighting the location of war graves
within Swanton Morley (All Saints) Churchyard.
The erection of the sign followed a complete renovation of the
war graves plot in the cemetery.
Work began straightening and re-aligning the headstones using a
multi-skilled team of CWGC staff. The existing turf in the plot was
stripped out and new turf was laid.
Horticultural renovations started immediately following
Christmas but were put on hold due to severe weather. With the work
now complete, the new borders are ready to be planted - creating an
immaculate plot to CWGC specifications.
Because of a large rabbit population in the churchyard it was
necessary to place a forestry rabbit fence to prevent damage to the
plot. The rabbit fence will eventually be enclosed in a yew
The work is part of a new initiative to enhance the
horticultural appearance of war grave plots across the UK and bring
them in keeping with the war cemeteries and memorials maintained by
the Commission overseas.
Church Warden and Fabric Officer Gerry Palmer, said: "This has
made a great improvement to this area and will be much appreciated
by all who visit the churchyard."
