Commission Restores Graves in Equatorial Guinea
20 June 2013
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission grave plot in
Malabo Cemetery, Equatorial Guinea, has been restored.
Malabo is the Capital of Equatorial Guinea located on the northern
coast of Bioko Island (formerly Fernando Pó) on the rim of a sunken
volcano.. Its location, in the Tropics, ensures vegetation grows
vigorously, posing challenges to our maintenance of the graves.
Restoration work started in mid-May using contractors and was
recently finished to a very high standard.
Malabo Cemetery contains the graves of
ten Commonwealth airmen of the Second World War. They died when
their Sunderland Flying Boat flew into a tornado just off the coast
in June 1944
