UK Sec. of State Visits War Graves
24 January 2014
Ahead of the Centenary of the Great War, the Right Honourable
Eric Pickles MP, UK Secretary of State for the Department for
Communities and Local Government, toured some of the CWGC's most
iconic sites in France and Belgium.
On 23 and 24 January, Mr Pickles, MP for Brentwood and Ongar in
Essex, visited a number of our sites in France and Belgium,
including our workshop in Arras, the Thiepval Memorial, Tyne Cot
Cemetery and Memorial as well as the Menin Gate, where he laid a
wreath during the Last Post ceremony
Mr Pickle's department is playing a key role in the British
government's First World War commemorations. Last year, it
announced a nationwide competition to design First World War
Victoria Cross paving stones, to be placed in the birthplaces of
Victoria Cross recipients across the UK.
