CWGC Launches New Education Resource for First World War Centenary

20 March 2014

At this year's Education Show, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) will launch an exciting new education resource to help teachers engage students in the Centenary of the First World War.

Virtual Cemetery at  is an online, interactive tool for the classroom, and is packed with thought-provoking activities for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils studying Citizenship, History and Religious Studies.

The website includes videos and image galleries, perfect for lesson starter activities, which introduces teachers and students to the history of the CWGC, the cemeteries and memorials we care for around the globe, and the people we commemorate. Virtual Cemetery uses the CWGC's work as a springboard to a much larger debate about the Centenary and how the servicemen and women of the First World War should be remembered. It also includes a teacher's section with curriculum notes, lesson plans and classroom activities.

Glenn Hearnden, the CWGC's Education Manager, explained: "We wanted to create a powerful, but easy-to-use resource for teachers, that engages their pupils in the relevance of the CWGC and the importance of the work we do to remember those Commonwealth servicemen and women who died in the war.

"We believe Virtual Cemetery  is the perfect learning tool ahead of the Centenary of the First World War, and will ensure that generations to come will continue to remember those who died."
