Rededication at Popielow Cemetery, Poland

07 August 2014

On 21 August 2014, there will be a rededication service to mark the graves of Lance Corporal John Saunders and Trooper Henry Thomson MM at Popielow Cemetery, Poland. The service will be attended by representatives from the families of both men, the regiments with which they served, the British Embassy in Poland, the CWGC and the British Ministry of Defence.

Lance Corporal John Saunders and Trooper Henry Thomson MM, of the Tyneside Scottish, The Black Watch and the Lothian and Border Yeomanry respectively, were killed whilst Prisoners of War in July 1944.

Both men were buried in Popielow but recorded as 'missing' on the Dunkirk Memorial. Following a successful submission made by relatives of Lance Corporal Saunders to the CWGC the two graves have recently been marked with Commission headstones and the names will be removed from the Dunkirk Memorial.

The service is being organised by the MOD (Joint Casualty & Compassionate Centre) in conjunction with British Defence Staff based in Poland and the CWGC.
