Vandalism at Harefield St Mary's
23 November 2015
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is aware of the vandalism at Harefield (St Mary's) Churchyard. Headstones of Australian war dead have been vandalised with blue spray paint.
Assistant Director General for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Mike Bullen, said: "We are extremely disappointed by this deliberate act of vandalism and deplore the actions of those responsible.
"We have a team at the cemetery now, taking action to clean the headstones, and we hope to get the war graves back to their original condition. We are in contact with the police and the Australian High Commission and New Zealand High Commission and will assist in any way we can."
This is the second time the cemetery has been targeted. Damage was also discovered in April this year, shortly before ANZAC day services, and shortly before the restored memorials had been unveiled.
