03 June 2015

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission welcomed the Australian High Commissioner and the Japanese Ambassador to Imphal War Cemetery, India for a wreath laying ceremony in memory of those that died at the Battle of Imphal.

Mr Takeshi Yagi became the first Japanese Ambassador to lay a wreath at the CWGC Imphal War Cemetery at the ceremony on 28 May.

The Battle of Imphal was amongst the fiercest seen in India during the Second World War, with over 1,600 casualties commemorated at the War Cemetery alone.

"The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was honoured to welcome Australian High Commissioner, Mr Patrick Suckling and Japanese Ambassador to India, Mr Takeshi Yagi," said Rich Hills, Director Africa and Asia Pacific Area.

"We are pleased to welcome all those who make the pilgrimage to Imphal War Cemetery to join us in remembering those commemorated here."
