Rededication Service at Leeuwarden Northern General Cemetery

15 September 2015

On 15 September at 1000hrs a rededication service will take place in Leeuwarden Northern General Cemetery for the crew of Wellington R 1397 which crashed on 25 July 1941 in the province of Friesland after a successful return from a mission above Germany.

Thorough investigation from local historians, the Royal Dutch Air Force and the Ministry of Defence, Joint Casualty and Compassionate Commemorations Team,  has led to the positive confirmation that the present collective grave in the Northern Cemetery in Leeuwarden, marking the burial place of 4 unknown airmen, is in fact the burial place of the 6 crew members of  Wellington R 1397.

Two new headstones bearing the names of the six airmen have been manufactured by the CWGC and will be installed over the collective grave.
