Shining a light on local war dead

15 August 2016

Community place lanterns on their local war graves as part of CWGC Living Memory Project.

The Shorncliffe Trust have led their local community in placing lanterns on all Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) headstones in Shorncliffe Military Cemetery.

Over 550 lanterns were lit, to shine a light on those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice – remembering particularly those who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme, 100 years ago.

The evening was held as part of the CWGC Living Memory Project -- aimed at encouraging communities to re-discover their local war graves.
