12 September 2016
On Thursday 15 September, New Zealand will commemorate the centenary of the first major battle in which soldiers of the New Zealand Division engaged on the Western Front during the First World War.
Three ceremonies will be held at Longueval on the Somme to mark this event, attended by high level representatives from New Zealand and France. The ceremonies will be led by the New Zealand Defence Force Maori Cultural Group.
6.30am: departure on foot from Longueval Town Hall to the New Zealand Memorial for a traditional dawn ceremony.
11am: New Zealand national commemoration at the CWGC Caterpillar Valley Cemetery and Memorial. For security reasons, there will be a (free) shuttle service in place from Longueval town centre from 8:30am. There is no parking on site.
7.30pm: Return to the New Zealand Memorial for a sunset ceremony.
All the events are free and open to the public – no ticket is necessary – but there are security measures in place on site. More information is available from http://ww100.govt.nz/battle-of-the-somme-centenary
