Re-lighting the flame at the Arc de Triomphe
22 November 2012
Each year the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is represented
at the ceremony and service for the relighting of the flame at
the tomb of the unknown soldier at the Arc the Triomphe in
Paris.
Customarily the ceremony is held a week after Remembrance Sunday
and is attended by members of the CWGC French Joint Committee which
consists of CWGC commissioners and host nation
officials. The event is organised by a different member
government each year, this year by Her Excellency Rosemary Banks,
the New Zealand ambassador to France.
The CWGC Commissioner Professor Hew Strachan attended the event
-- along with dozens of students from Lillers in
northern France.
