Crown Prince Filip leads Remembrance Ceremony under the Menin Gate
13 November 2012
Hundreds of people attended the Remembrance Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ieper on Sunday. The
tributes to the fallen were led by Crown Prince Filip of the
Belgians, who laid the first wreath.
Other wreaths were laid by the Prime Minister and Governor of
Flanders, the Mayor of Ieper, and the Ambassadors of the member
governments of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and of the
United States, Ireland and Germany.
Wreaths were also laid on behalf of veterans' associations and
other organisations. The last wreath was laid on behalf of the
Commonwealth War Graves Commission by Air Chief Marshal Sir Joe
French.
The streets near the gate were thronged with people as a silence
was observed to remember the fallen. At the end of the ceremony
thousands of poppy leaves were let fall through the skylights in
the roof of the gate.
