Mametz Wood 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial marks 25th anniversary
23 July 2012
More than a hundred people attended a ceremony to mark the 25th
anniversary of the inauguration of the 38th (Welsh) Division
Memorial at Mametz Wood on the Somme.
Among them was the sculptor of the memorial, David Petersen, the
Mayor of Mametz, Stephane Bunel, and the Director of the France
Area of the CWGC.
People travelled from North and South Wales to mark the
occasion. It was in July 1916 that the 38th (Welsh) Division
suffered terrible losses in capturing Mametz Wood. Robert Graves,
an officer in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, wrote that not a tree was
left unbroken in the wood.
