PM visits Rangoon War Cemetery
13 April 2012
The prime minister - on a four-day tour of South East Asia
- found time to visit the Rangoon War Cemetery in Myanmar,
formerly Burma.
David Cameron is the first British prime minister to visit the
country, and he paid his respects at the War Cemetery on a day
during which he met the Burmese president Thein Sein and the
pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Rangoon War Cemetery was first used as a burial ground
immediately after the recapture of the city in May 1945.
There are 1,381 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War
buried or commemorated in the cemetery.
It also contains the graves of 36 Commonwealth servicemen who
died in Rangoon during the First World War.
