Princess Royal visits South African cemetery
23 April 2012
The Princess Royal, accompanied by her husband -- one of the
Commonwealth War Graves Commissioners, Vice Admiral Sir Tim
Laurence -- has visited the Simon's Town (Dido Valley) Cemetery
near Cape Town in South Africa. The Princess laid a wreath at the
Cross of Sacrifice.
Cape Town and Simon's Town were the scene of large-scale
shipping movements, including hospital ships, during both World
Wars.
Simon's Town (Dido Valley) Cemetery contains 77 burials of
the First World War and 106 of the Second World War, one of which
is unidentified. Most of the burials are of naval personnel.
