Sikh Community Group Visit Monastir Road Indian Cemetery, Greece
23 October 2012
On 16 October, a delegation from the Sikh community of
Birmingham paid a visit to Monastir Road Indian Cemetery, Greece.
The visit was part of a tour of Sikh burial grounds of the First
and Second World War, throughout Europe. The aim was to raise
awareness within the local community of the sacrifices Sikh
servicemen made. It is hoped that this awareness will, in turn,
improve community relations in these areas.
Martin Leiper, Regional Supervisor for Greece, met the
delegation and talked with them about the Commission's work.
At the end of their visit the group presented our Mikra Mobile
Team with a Certificate of Appreciation, for their continued work
in maintaining the cemetery.
The delegation are planning to carry out a yearly ceremony at
the cemetery, involving the local Sikh community.
