This attack aimed at securing, on the right, the low ridge running north-westward rowards Thilloy (with its good observation towards Le Transloy); in the centre an attempt would be made to advance the line to a point where it overlooked Ligny; and on the left an advance beyond Le Sars to include the Butte de Warlencourt.
