The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

A major factor in the failure of Fourth Army's October attacks was the continued violence of the German artillery fire; despite Haig's belief in the waning of German defensive capability actual participants testified to the effectiveness of the German barrages - (and, in some instances, on the limited success of the British bombardments - especially as regards the failure to silence the more distant and carefully sited German machine gun positions) - and the continued unflagging determination of the German defenders. Nonetheless, and despite the adverse weather conditions, depleted units of the Fourth Army persistently attempted desperately difficult forward movements well into November with little or no significant success.
