A near impregnable continuous line of German trenches ran for around 5,500 yards from the Schwaben Redoubt (north of Thiepval) to the north of Courcelette; for the first 1,500 yards, eastward from the Schwaben Redoubt, the line was known as Stuff trench; its eastward continuation towards Courcelette was known as Regina trench. Much of Regina trench was situated on the reverse slope of the ridge, beyond the crest line.
