General view od the battlefield at Beaumont-Hamel showing the blasted land, November 1916Beaumont-Hamel was another unsuccessful 1 July objective which over the late summer and autumn entered the soldiers' mythology as a place of evil reputation. This heavily fortified village position was additionally enhanced by the existence of a system of underground caves and tunnels. 51st (Highland) Division’s advance on 13 November was prefaced at zero hour by the blowing of a large mine under Hawthorn Redoubt, the location of important German machine gun positions. The site, now known as Hawthorn Crater, had been previously wrecked by a massive mine explosion on 1 July.
