The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

Gough was keenly aware that Sir Douglas Haig's presence at the Inter-Allied Conference at Chantilly on 15-16 November would not be well-served by military setbacks. Again, the successes of 13-14 November (the capture of Beaumont-Hamel, St Pierre Divion and Beaucourt) could not but help bolster Haig's position with regard to his fellow delegates. It was Haig's concern to avoid any possible damaging setbacks which prompted him first to request the discontinuance of large scale attacks by Fifth Army until his return and later to offer limited approval for further operations, subject to satisfactory weather conditions.
