The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

No greater contrast to the beautiful summer weather of the opening day of the Somme battles in July could have been provided than the depressing wintry extremes that characterised the morning of the last day of the offensive: “During the night the first snow of the winter had fallen and at 6.10am on the 18th November the assault was delivered in whirling sleet which afterward change to rain. More abominable conditions for active warfare are hardly to be imagined: the infantry, dark figures only visible for a short distance against the white ground, groped their way forward as best they could through half frozen mud that was soon to dissolve into chalky slime.” ‘Military Operations. France and Belgium, 1916.’, Vol II, Captain Wilfrid Miles, 1938, p.514).
