The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

On the evening of 1 July General Gough's Reserve Army (earmarked for the exploitation of the breakthrough that never quite occurred), was given the damaged remnants of X and VIII Corps - the two northern Corps of Rawlinson's Fourth Army - and assumed responsibility for these formations in the fighting north of the Albert-Bapaume road. On 2 July, attacks continued along the entire front in search of breakthroughs against near impregnable trench defences and in support of isolated outposts of the British advance made on 1 July.
