The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

Haig (Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force), concerned by the difficulties involved in a complex night action, eventually agreed on condition that the attack's flanks were first secured by the capture of Mametz Wood and Trones Wood, as vicious fighting for the latter was still going on.
