The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

High Wood was of great tactical importance as it lay on the crest of the ridge, 2,000 yards north-west of Longueval. The decision to wait for the arrival of the much delayed cavalry forces meant that the opportunity of its successful occupation was lost. Tragically it took another two whole months of bitter fighting to secure the wood in British hands.
