The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

A forward projection or extension of the trench lines vulnerable to attack from the sides or 'flanks'. Salients were uncomfortable positions to occupy as enemy fire could be directed from all angles, sometimes directly into the defensive line ('enfilade fire') and, disconcertingly, from the rear.
