The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The South African Brigade had, due to other operational commitments, little more than half its total complement available at the start of the attack. The initial advance into the wood, under the tactical command of Lieutenant-Colonel Tanner, was undertaken by the 2nd Battalion (Natal and Orange Free State), 3rd Battalion (Transvaal & Rhodesia) and two companies of the 4th Battalion (South African Scottish).
