The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The South African Brigade went into Delville Wood with a strength of 121 officers and 3,032 other ranks. When the post-relief roll was called on 21 July only 29 officers and 751 other ranks were present. The six days of fighting in Delville Wood cost the South Africans more than 2,300 casualties.
