The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The object of the Ginchy attack was not only to secure the village but extend the line beyond to 'Point 141.7' and from there to Leuze Wood. It also required clearing the ground to the south-east of the wood, the better to form a strong flank facing Combles. Combles itself was to be 'pinched-out' after British and French troops joined up beyond its far side.
