The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The planning for the Battle of Morval was exceedingly meticulous; the precisely defined and limited objectives were to be secured in three separate 'phases' or 'jumps', each forward movement and pause for re-grouping being scheduled into the carefully considered artillery fire plan. The attack (which involved ten divisions) was scheduled for the afternoon in response to a request from the French - reflecting their preference for daylight assaults which allowed better observation for supporting artillery fire.
