The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The British artillery concentration on the German front (some areas of which had been hastily and inadequately constructed during the poor weather) was formidable. In the region of 400,000 shells were expended on an enemy front of around 18,000 yards, which represented a higher weight of shell per yard of front than for the September 15 Flers-Courcelette offensive.
