These two attacks were based on Haig’s conviction that German reserves were nearly exhausted and that relentless Allied pressure would damage the German Army beyond repair. The capture of the ridge would also, Haig believed, conveniently straighten the overall British line and assist in the general preparation for further offensive operations.
