The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The ridge between Thiepval and Mouquet Farm was between 140 and 160 metres high and the purpose of the assault was to drive the Germans off the whole of the crest-line in order to deny enemy observation towards Albert and the British rear areas and obtain good observation of the upper Ancre with a view to further offensive operations.
