The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The ultimate objective of the Canadian forces (who provided vital flank protection for the 11th and 18th Division's strike on Thiepval) was Regina Trench, which lay beyond the crest line, on the reverse slope of the ridge, and therefore beyond direct observation. By the end of the bitterly contested fighting, although securing most of their objectives, Regina Trench remained in German hands.
