The Battle of the Somme - The 12 Battles of the Somme (1 July - 18 November, 1916) - CWGC

The battered ruins of Mouquet Farm formed the backdrop to yet more confused and vicious hand-to-hand fighting; although early efforts to blow in the position’s tunnel entrances went well the remnant German garrison put up the most determined resistance from rubble filled cellars, shell holes and shattered trenches. A mixed group of surviving attackers, supported by a machine-gun salvaged by the crew of a nearby ditched tank, eventually bombed the defenders to the point of exhaustion. At 5.30pm the ‘garrison’ of one German officer and 55 other ranks surrendered.
