Machine guns firing on fixed lines added to the intense artillery bombardment which was perfectly timed to 'lift' (move forward) at the same time as the infantry advanced.

An innovative form of 'creeping barrage' (in which the exploding shells of the attacking force formed a protective screen for the advancing infantry) was employed in which only high explosive (HE) with delay fuses were used to avoid the danger to the attacking troops of shells bursting short by hitting trees and buildings.
