On 41st Division's front tank support proved very effective; four tanks, still operational after a considerable advance, followed the British 'creeping barrage' into the shattered remnants of Flers, with the infantry following in their wake. While one tank continued up the main road through the village, the other three moved either side of the hamlet and dealt with German machine-guns. Flers was secured, though 41st Division's casualties were very high. Tanks also assisted the New Zealand Division's move towards the left of Flers.
