On 3 September the 20th Manchesters and 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers gained temporary access to portions of the village but were forced out by German counter-attacks; again, on 4 September the 9th Devons entered the village but had later to withdraw.

On 6 September the attack of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders (much hindered by mud) was repulsed by German machine guns concealed in shattered buildings and shell-holes and although two companies of the 9th Devons got into the village in the afternoon they were forced to retire in the face of violent German resistance.
